STREET PROOFING and SELF DEFENCE FOR WOMEN
What is street proofing?
Street proofing is being aware of your surroundings, people, and how to avoid a bad situation.
Here is a list of things to think about and practice:
- Change all locks on a new house
- Your home should be well lit, front and back.
- Close blinds and curtains at night.
- If home alone turn on the stereo or television, make it appear as if there is more than one person in the home.
- Never go to a laundry mat alone.
- Never use a banking machine at night unless it is inside of a store area.
- Call police for anything suspicious.
- Don’t pass out information about your neighbours.
- Don’t hide house keys in an obvious place.
- Leave a message where you are going (inside the house not on the door).
- Never count money out in the open.
- Stay away from stairways.
- Don’t get on an elevator with someone strange. Stay near buttons if already on.
- Yell FIRE along with HELP to attract attention.
- Car keys should be in your hand when you leave.
- Lock car at all times.
- Park in a well lit area.
- If your car breaks down: put on four way flashers, put a sign in the window, lock doors, close windows, don’t take a ride for help, ask person who may stop to send help,
- At home keep doors, screen doors included, locked at all times.
- Ask police officer, service person, delivery person for ID – keep screen door locked.
- Do not a person in distress into your home. Tell them you will call the police for help.
- Telephones should have emergency number ( 9 – 1 – 1 ) posted on the phone and/or programmed in.
- Keep 25 cents with you at all times – for a pay phone.
- If selling articles give phone number only.
- Gas tank should always be ½ full.
- Don’t help stranded motorist, call police at next stop or use your cell phone.
- Walk out and around openings, bushes, corners, stairways, or other obstructions.
Things to remember to tell police : height, weight, age, hair colour, eye colour, clothing, tattoos, glasses, nationality, complexion, jewelry, any other significant or insignificant items.
Here is a list of things you may have on you that may help in your defence :
- Purse
- Shoes
- Magazine or newspaper
- Hair spray
- Belt
- Comb
- Brush
- Car keys
- House keys
Weapon Defenses :
- Get your body out of the line of fire.
- Control the arm that controls the weapon.
- You must do a strike or immobilize the person.
- Disarm them.
Strikes :
- Front kick with instep and ball of foot.
- Back kick with heel, NOT toes.
- Palm heel strike.
- Four finger strike to eyes.
- Elbows and knees.
Blocks :
- Leg check.
- High block with arm.
- Outward and inward with arm.
Three steps to follow :
- Attitude
– it will work, no rules, no doubts.
- Preparation
– you are only as good as your last workout.
- Action
– what you do.
